GMU-Fairfax Research I Building

About

The Center for Online Workforce Development is the nation's first academic research body focused on the use of technology-mediated instruction to train and retrain America's workers. The U.S. Department of Defense created the Center through a grant from the ADL Initiative. The Center, founded in September of 2009, is located in Fairfax, Virginia on the campus of George Mason University (GMU); its administrative home at GMU is within the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Mission

The Center for Online Workforce Development sponsors basic and applied research on the use of online learning technologies for training and retraining workers. It will capture and share the best computer-based training practices to assist those seeking jobs or looking to advance their careers. Its overall goal is to develop a globally competitive workforce.

The Center will host academic and public meetings and conferences, and forge partnerships with community colleges, trade associations, and others throughout the United States, Virginia, and the Washington, DC region.

Paul Bardack, DirectorPaul Bardack, Director

Paul Bardack is the Director of the George Mason University Center for Online Workforce Development. Prior to founding the Center, he served as Deputy Director of the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. He previously managed Booz Allen Hamilton's international distance learning practice and was first CEO of the award-winning MyJewishLearning.com. He has served as the Chair of the United States Distance Learning Association, which he now serves as Chairman Emeritus.

Mr. Bardack has also held high-level positions related to economic development policy making and implementing within federal, state, and local governments. Educated as a lawyer, he is licensed to practice in Washington, DC. A graduate of Yale University and the American University School of Law, he is listed in Who's Who in America.
