About
The United Kingdom Advanced Distributed Learning Partnership Laboratory (U.K. ADL Partnership Lab), formed in 2002, is located in Telford, England. It is a collaborative project between ADL and the Learning Lab at the University of Wolverhampton. The U.K. ADL Partnership Lab promotes global e-learning standards development and acceptance. The U.S. and U.K. collaborate on producing sharable content and joint research projects.
Mission
The U.K. ADL Partnership Lab promotes the development and acceptance of global e-learning standards. The U.S. and U.K. collaborate on the production of sharable content and joint research projects. The Lab endeavors to assist the U.K. in becoming an e-learning nation by:
- Supporting the U.K. government in raising educational standards.
- Supporting U.K. businesses in the transition to knowledge-based organizations.
- Conducting applied research in the e-learning field.
- Raising awareness in the use of technology to support learning in its numerous forms, for all age groups and educational levels.
- Supporting the U.K. government and organizations in their lifelong learning strategies.
John Traxler, Acting Director
John Traxler is the Acting Director of the ADL Partnership Lab and of the Learning Lab at the University of Wolverhampton, and is Reader in Mobile Technology for e-Learning. He works with the University's Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching looking at innovative technologies to support diverse communities of students and with the University's Centre for International Development and Training. He is Director of the International Association for Mobile Learning, and is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mobile Learning and is Conference chair of mLearn2008, the world's biggest and oldest mobile learning research conference.
He has given presentations at the South African national science festival, SciFest, at Rhodes University, at Microsoft's Mobile Learning Summit in Seattle, and was invited by the Canadian government to the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (IEEE/ACM ICTD) conference in Bangalore. He has been visiting scientist at the Meraka Institute in Pretoria supporting mobile technology projects and supporting mobile development in Cambodia.
Professor Traxler is jointly responsible for national workshops on mobile learning for U.K. universities and has delivered similar workshops to university staff in Ireland, Germany, Kenya, South Africa, Canada, and India. He advises U.K. universities on mobile learning projects. He was previously a university lecturer in computer science and software engineering interested in programming paradigms. He has degrees in computer science, astronomy and engineering and a research degree in numerical methods.
