It’s hard to keep up with Judy Brown, a key member of ADL’s Immersive Learning Technologies Team and an in-demand educational technology consultant. Judy is constantly on the move, helping to spread the message of the ADL Initiative while forging connections and informing the world about the status of mobile learning and its potential. Here’s a quick look at some of Judy’s recent activities. She’s been busy:
Advising distance learning and mobile learning organizations
In March, we were proud to learn Judy had been appointed to the United States Distance Learning Association Advisory Board. Judy brings her expertise in mobile learning to a board that represents a variety of educational constituencies, including Pre-K through 12 education, higher education, homeschooling, continuing education, corporate training, military and government training, and telehealth.
Judy also recently joined the advisory board for the new Mobile Learning Conference (mLearnCon). mLearnCon, whose motto is “Context is King. Content is Core. Learning is Everywhere…”, will hold its first conference June 15-17, 2010 in San Diego, CA. It will feature presentations covering a wide variety of topics related to mobile learning, including management strategies, platforms, operating systems, authoring tools, content design and development, and best practices, as they apply to academic, corporate, government, and military sectors.
Receiving an education innovator award
Judy was recently recognized by eCollegeFinder as one of its top 50 innovative educators when she received the Education Innovator Award for her contributions on mLearnopedia.com, a mobile learning news site that she coordinates and maintains. eCollegeFinder—an organization dedicated to distance learning, online learning, and educational technology— gives this award to those whom it considers to be the top 50 resources on the Internet for advancing and expanding learning into new, innovative formats. We extend our congratulations to Judy for this recognition!
Getting the message across in person...
“Your Learners ARE Mobile: Is Your Learning?” Judy posed this provocative question to the Southern Regional Education Board (SERB) Symposium on Teaching and Learning in Atlanta, GA on March 11. In her presentation, Judy discussed the boom in the development and ubiquity mobile learning technology, and the niche it has, and potentially can fill, in e-learning and the goals of ADL.
On March 3, Judy gave the opening keynote address at the EDUCAUSE ELI Online Spring Focus Session, “Mobile Learning 2.0: The Next Phase of Innovation in Mobility.” Judy’s address, entitled “A Revolution in Learning is Taking Place in Our Hands,” opened the two-day Webinar exploring the arena of mobile learning by offering an overview of what mobile learning is (and is not), how it’s being used today, and where its potential lies in the future.
March 17 saw Judy giving her “Mobile Learning Overview” presentation at the Army Distance Learning Conference in Newport News, VA. (Download PDF, 12MB)
Judy also gave a presentation at the Team Orlando lunch meeting as well as a two-session Webinar for the Masie Performance Support: Learning at the Moment of Need event and at the eLearning Guild Learning Solutions Conference.
...and publishing articles
Judy’s article “Can You Hear Me Now?" (Download PDF, 1MB) was published in the February 2010 issue of T+D Magazine, a publication of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). In her article, Judy advocates using mobile technology for learning, gives an overview of the tools available and explains when and how one might utilize mobile technology for delivering educational content. Be sure to bookmark this as a reference article about mobile learning!
