Emerging Tech

The Emerging Technologies Team researches and explores the newest technologies for potential use by the DoD and other government organizations. The team focuses on discovering new technologies or methodologies for delivering effective, personalized training. The Emerging Technologies capability supports both the NEXT GENERATION LEARNING ENVIRONMENT and NEXT GENERATION LEARNER of ADL’s research and development strategies.
The Emerging Technologies Team is currently equipped to conduct research in these advanced technology areas — Games, Virtual Worlds, and Social Media – and works with other ADL teams to integrate existing learning technologies into virtual worlds and other 3D environments.
The Emerging Technologies Team operates from the Emerging Technology Collaboration Center in Orlando, Florida, where it collaborates with its partners in Team Orlando and especially the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) . DAU shares space with ADL for their games and virtualization experiments.
Research Summary

The Emerging Technologies Team explores new technologies – enabling these technologies to work in existing environments and discovering how disparate populations use or accept new technologies.
The team is constantly testing the newest Virtual Worlds and Games in the Emerging Technology Collaboration Center (ETCC) with the help of its research partners. With a constantly evolving supply of games, consoles, PCs, virtual world platforms, and other experimental technology, the team monitors the constantly changing technology landscape.
Because of ADL’s role within the Department of Defense, the Emerging Technologies Team is dedicated to looking for ways to get new technologies approved on DoD networks. It also explores innovative ways to utilize platforms that are already accessible to DoD personnel through common desktop platforms, such as 3D web applications, frame throwing technologies, and lightweight web-based gaming technologies.
In an effort to ensure that users are getting the technologies they need as well as the technologies they want to use, the team works closely with ADL’s Adaptive Training Team to explore user preferences for games, as well as issues related to introducing established technologies into existing social circles.
The ADL Emerging Technologies Team is involved in many efforts. Make sure to check out the “Learn More” tab for presentations, videos, and links.
Serious Games Showcase & Challenge
Going into its sixth year, the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge has emerged as a premier outlet to demonstrate the newest technologies available to the DoD. Held annually at the I/ITSEC conference, the Showcase continues to bring fresh ideas into the world of serious games through a competitive award process. This year, the Challenge will present a special OSD-sponsored award for adaptability.
Social Media / Gamification
The Emerging Technologies Team is researching the effects of gamification and social media in learning. This includes experimenting with game portals for content as well as applying achievement models to learning management systems and similar activities. The team is collaborating with the ADL Technical Team in reviewing applicable social media platforms and what information can be applied to learning.
NAWCT3D Support

The ADL Co-Lab has collaborated with Orlando’s Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) in the creation of NAWCT3D Island in Second Life. The primary goal of this Virtual World is to provide information and interest to the general public on the products and services that NAWCTSD has to offer. It provides a full experience of not only NAWCTSD simulators but the quality of life and benefits of being a Navy employee. In support of this effort, the Emerging Technologies Team helped to design and build this Second Life Island. Check us out in-world by following this SLURL (requires Second Life client to view).
Team Orlando Second Life Island

The Team Orlando Second Life Island serves as a hub for Team Orlando activities within Second Life. The Emerging Technologies Team maintains an ADL presence on the island with available help desk hours through collaboration with the ADL Helpdesk, and hosts an arcade showcasing many games developed by ADL and its partners. Learn more at the Team Orlando site.
Virtual World for Wounded Warriors

The Virtual World for Wounded Warriors is a private social space for wounded warriors to meet and collaborate. Created in partnership with Semper Fi Odyssey, the space is currently being tested to meet the needs of this unique community. A public version of the world is also hosted in the RDECOM STTC’s Military Open Simulator Enterprise Strategy (MOSES) project. Visit the MOSES site for more information.
DAU Games (Defense Acquisition University)

ADL and DAU have collaborated on a number of games and features in the DAU Games Portal. The games feature unique capabilities to educate acquisition professionals as well as leverage features of the portal, such as high score tables and achievements. The games also provide a platform for research in usability and preferences that are underway with the Research Team. Learn more at the DAU Games site.
