The Learning Record Store (LRS) can have many interface points. One of these is an application to be run on a typical tablet platform – such as that used by Android devices. This User-Interface to the LRS is native to the system and requires no browser. It is configured to pull and push data directly from/to the LRS. A common use case for this data push/pull is that of instructors, which have not typically seen SCORM-conformant interfaces to extract learner data.
The concept of an Android deployment application and use in “non-student” interactions came from the following community requirements:
It shouldn’t be necessary to rely on an LMS to implement and administer SCORM content
Content that can generate reports, manage data across courses, support team tracking
Instructors and content developers want to see across the board results to modify both instruction and content
Tracking learning not initiated by the LMS

Research Summary
The development of the Android app shows that content doesn’t need to be developed only for a learner. The ability for an instructor to go into a course and pull learner data has not historically been a part of specifications. This can allow for not only Just-in-Time training, but Just-in-Time instructor feedback.
The current deployment on Android (no plans for iPhone, but it can certainly be done) allows for a view into the LMS that the instructor would have. Different permission levels have different functionalities. It also provides the ability to send data back to the LMS and directly change learner’s progress, scores, etc. This allows for learning outside of an LMS, and even outside normal bounds of SCORM tracking, to be tracked.
ADL currently supports two versions of this application – one of which runs on the TinCan Model, the other that runs on CMI5. They will be available in the near-term, free of charge, from ADLnet.gov.
