The Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) has been involved with the advancement of training technology since 1988. The CMI Data Model they developed has been used in SCORM since its inception. CMI5 is the new runtime communication data tracking framework under development by AICC.
The CMI5 Project looks to bring both a new Run-Time Web Service (RTWS) (a Phase I effort originally started by LETSI) and Data Model to the Next Generation SCORM. The following is an excerpt from AICC’s site regarding this effort:
"Today’s e-learning content and LMS systems are limited by the current standards for tracking trainee performance (AICC/SCORM). These standards attempted to define all of the data that training professionals needed to monitor trainee progress. If a data element was not “on the list”, it could not be recorded unless there was custom LMS development. With the release of CMI-5 this will no longer be a problem. Designers of content can record virtually any data they need and their content will pass that data to any CMI-5 compliant LMS; the limitations on what is possible to record in your LMS will be lifted."
ADL is working with AICC on the development of CMI5 and seeks to determine if it can serve the needs of the Next Generation SCORM.

Research Summary
CMI5 is an incremental approach to implementing the next version of the CMI Data Model as a part of Phase I of the creation of the Next Generation SCORM.
The approach used by CMI5 is to use the previous CMI/SCORM data model and evolve it to the next level.
CMI5 has also absorbed the Run-Time Service efforts of LETSI in creation of a Run-Time Web Service (RTWS).
Draft versions of CMI5 are in process and the formal release is scheduled for a March 1, 2012 release of a version for public comments. Version 1.0 is targeted for April 15, 2012.
Involvement is welcomed! AICC states the following about collaboration in this effort:
"There is still major specification development in progress and the AICC is looking for new members to participate in this exciting new effort. In order to get advanced drafts of the specification (and participate in the specification development) you must be an AICC member."
