The Learning Record Store (LRS) is now the main tracking feature of what was traditionally done by a Learning Management System (LMS). This is in conjunction with the movement from “one stop shop” to a collection of Web Services. An LMS may implement an LRS in the suite of web services that it provides or may integrate with another product to provide tracking. The LRS keeps track of all learning experiences and tracks all learning data regardless of platform. ADL will create and aid others in the creation of APIs to allow exposure to the LRS by different devices, services, and technologies.
The concept of the LRS was derived from the following community requirements:
Service-based model supports non-LMS users (whether by choice or financial restrictions)
Removing sequencing from the content package and eliminating reliance on LMS to generate content structures such as a Table of Contents
Moving away from the concept of .zip content packages and an LMS import process
Exposing “my data” through an external interface rather than reliance on an LMS to do it
Reliance on a browser
Research Summary
The Learning Record Store (LRS) is the backbone to all of the ADL Proof-of-Concepts. It controls the user management, content management, and experience tracking for all interactions between user, content, and system. Fitting to its name, it is also the place where all the data from the learning experience is stored.
Unlike the SCORM content interaction with a Learning Management System, the LRS does not provide sequencing of content. It is expected that content either internalize its own sequencing or that an additional Web Service perform sequencing actions. It is envisioned that this be some form of intelligent tutor that can look at a learner’s profile and deliver the “fitting” next learning experience. It can also lean on an existing legacy SCORM sequencing engine.
ADL is developing APIs to be used in a variety of contexts. For example, a .dll file has been created for use in any .NET application to allow communication with the LRS. Project Tin Can created a very usable prototype for the Learning Record Store. LRS implementations will evolve as the Next Generation SCORM Data Model is formed.
