Learning Registry Launched on November 7
The official launch of the Learning Registry project was announced at the State Educational Technology Directors Association’s Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. The Learning Registry is a joint project between the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Defense (DoD). ADL provided the technical leadership for the Learning Registry project, an infrastructure allowing the exchange and evaluation of learning resources based on metadata content.
The American Forces Press Service reported the announcement in its news article – “New Registry Identifies, Rates Online Learning Materials” – that was posted on the Department of Defense’s web site on November 8th. Frank C. DiGiovanni, Director of Training Readiness and Strategy in the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Readiness, explained that the Learning Registry “is a place that educators and individuals can go to look at online learning content…what’s different about this particular registry is that it uses networking techniques to … populate it from authoritative sources and … for people to be able to rate how relevant they think the content is for their needs.”
The Department of Education published a press release about the project on its site, and the Office of Educational Technology (OET) within the Dept. of Ed. also posted a brief announcement on the OET site. You can read the text of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s remarks about the significance of the Learning Registry for teachers and parents and view Steve Midgley’s slide presentation on how the Learning Registry works. The Learning Registry is listed in ADL’s Search & Retrieval projects area and also has its own web site at www.learningregistry.org.
