Bio

I am a Silicon Valley veteran who believes that artificial intelligence will transform education and training. I did early research on intelligent tutoring systems with Pat Suppes and Dexter Fletcher at Stanford University; edited the four-volume Handbook of Artificial Intelligence; and co-founded an AI startup in 1980. In recent years, I was an adviser to DARPA’s DARWARS project on immersive training systems; served as Director for SCORM Strategy at the U.S. Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative; and taught a freshman seminar on the Internet for 10 years at Stanford University. I currently serve as the Chair of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee and work with the IDA and the ADL on the Total Learning Architecture research project.
